China to Build 400 Wind Measurement Towers




  China will build 400 wind measurement towers of 70 and 100 meters in height in areas rich in wind energy to conduct detailed surveys and assessments of wind energy resources. Through two years of continuous observation, the project aims to provide comprehensive results of the national wind energy resource survey and assessment, with completion scheduled for 2011.


It is reported that, as part of the national wind energy resource survey and assessment project, the Wind and Solar Energy Resource Assessment Center of the Gansu Provincial Meteorological Bureau will set up 17 towers of 70 meters and 2 towers of 100 meters in the Hexi Corridor, Baiyin, Qingyang and other areas of Gansu this year. These towers will conduct detailed surveys and assessments of local wind energy, providing more detailed basic data for local wind power construction. 



It is also introduced that the goal of this national wind energy resource survey and assessment is to establish a national wind energy resource evaluation system that integrates professional observation networks, numerical simulation, and comprehensive evaluation. Based on the survey and assessment results, combined with terrain, transportation, power grid and other wind farm construction conditions, a reserve of wind farm projects with a total installed capacity of about 50 million kilowatts will be proposed.
