What precautions should be taken when using a cable fault tester?



 Cable fault tester consists of three main parts: the main unit of the power cable fault tester, the cable fault locator, and the cable identifier.The cable fault tester uses the time-domain reflection principle, transmitting a series of electrical pulses to the cable under test, and receiving reflected pulses caused by impedance changes in the cable. Based on the propagation speed of the wave in the cable and the time represented by the characteristic inflection points of the two reflected waves, the distance from the fault point to the test end can be measured.


Precautions when using the cable fault tester:


    1. When testing with the pulse method, be sure to disconnect all equipment in the station and perform the measurement on the outermost line.


    2. When testing with the flashover method, the trigger mode switch must be set to the "Flashover" position.


    3. When using the direct flashover method or the impulse flashover method for testing, pay attention to personal safety and equipment safety. The ground wire must be properly connected.


    4. After the flashover test is completed, cut off the power supply, disconnect the connection wires between the instrument and the high-voltage test device, and then discharge the stored charge in the high-voltage capacitor and the cable. When discharging, first add a current-limiting resistor R to limit the discharge current so that the current discharges slowly. After the voltage on the capacitor drops, then directly discharge to ground. If the resistance in the circuit is zero, the instantaneous discharge current can reach hundreds of amperes, which may cause serious equipment or personal accidents.


    5. During the direct flashover test, it is necessary to monitor the leakage current of the fault. If the current suddenly increases and the fault flashover phenomenon does not appear, the test voltage should be immediately reduced and the impulse flashover method should be used instead.


    The smooth operation of the cable fault tester system and the transmission of electric power depend on the normal operation of the cable lines. Once a line fault occurs, it will cause interruption of communication and power supply. If the fault cannot be detected and eliminated in time, it will cause significant economic losses and adverse social impact.
