What is the difference between a distribution box and a low-voltage switchgear?
Some people cannot distinguish between a distribution box and a low-voltage switchgear, and they say that functionally, they are indeed quite similar. So, is it just a difference in naming, or do the two refer to the same thing? No, they are not the same thing. Let's talk about the actual differences between a distribution box and a low-voltage switchgear.
The capacity of each circuit in a low-voltage switchgear is relatively large, and the circuit components in a low-voltage switchgear also need to include circuit-breaking elements, operating elements, and corresponding protective elements. In contrast, the capacity of each circuit in a distribution box is much smaller compared to that of a low-voltage switchgear, and the circuits do not have circuit-breaking elements, only small-capacity operating elements. A distribution box is just an extension of low-voltage circuits. If there is a need for many small-capacity and not very critical power supply circuits, you can take one power supply from the low-voltage switchgear and then divide it into multiple supply circuits within the distribution box to save costs.
The specific difference lies in the components. In low-voltage switchgear, molded case circuit breakers and air circuit breakers account for a larger proportion, and low-voltage switchgear also includes capacitor cabinets. However, the contents of a distribution box may be more complex. Generally, it has a larger switch that leads to a series of miniature circuit breakers. Some may simply have an electricity meter installed, like a magnetic card meter box for electricity. Others are used to drive motors, water pumps, fans, etc., and require many load-type contactors and relays. Additionally, the main circuit of a low-voltage switchgear mainly uses copper busbars, while distribution boxes have more wires.
In fact, the simplest way to distinguish them is by appearance. Generally, low-voltage switchgear is relatively large, with a height of about two meters. The size of a distribution box, on the other hand, varies; the smallest ones may be only the size of a palm, such as the common TV and radio box, which is also considered a distribution box. Even the largest ones are usually only about one meter high, and they are generally not large.
