On June 16, the 220 kV Binnan Substation renovation and expansion project in Nanjing, Jiangsu, was put into operation. This project is the first substation project of State Grid Corporation of China (SGCC) to install permanent identity tags for grid-connected equipment at the source of supplier manufacturing. On-site professionals used handheld terminals to scan QR codes, achieving multi-code linkage and information connectivity across procurement, construction, operation, and maintenance stages. The pilot project explored the feasibility of assigning unified identity codes (physical IDs) to power grid assets at the supplier source, verified the rationality of management process optimization and information system construction, and marked a phased achievement in the company's construction of physical IDs for power grid assets.


The construction of physical IDs for power grid assets is a major foundational project for the company to strengthen asset lifecycle management. It is conducive to integrating internal resources, breaking through traditional segmented management models, strengthening risk control at the source of assets, and improving the quality of equipment procurement. In 2016, the company initiated research and pilot projects on the physical ID system for power grid assets. With physical IDs as the carrier, and following the principle of "overall design, step-by-step implementation," the company comprehensively reviewed and analyzed the current management status, researched and established standards and systems for physical IDs of power grid assets, deepened professional collaboration across asset stages, coordinated the construction and transformation of information systems, and arranged for six units including State Grid Jiangsu Electric Power and State Grid Shaanxi Electric Power to carry out pilot projects. Through the construction of physical IDs for power grid assets, the company promotes the unification of asset lifecycle identity codes, achieves efficient information sharing and interaction throughout the entire lifecycle of power grid assets—from planning, procurement, construction, operation and maintenance, to retirement and scrapping—thereby improving asset management levels and meeting the needs of creating "two first-class" under the new situation of "Internet+".


As a designated pilot construction unit, State Grid Jiangsu Electric Power initiated the work of assigning physical IDs to power grid assets at the supplier source for related projects in January this year. The Nanjing 220 kV Binnan Substation renovation and expansion project, as one of the first batch of pilot projects designated by the company, involves the production and application verification of physical ID labels for 30 pieces of newly added equipment across five categories: main transformers, gas-insulated switchgear, disconnectors, reactors, and arresters.
